How to control Dark Crystal Brightness and Volume
Dark Crystal
Dark Crystal readers take advantage of the P4 controllers two-way reader interface to provide many new features. The new interface saves on wiring by removing the need for separate LED and BUZ signals while adding Alarms, Brightness control and Volume control.
Summary
With P4 controllers, you can access these new features standalone (from the integrated engineer’s keypad) or on-line from the Doors Enterprise software (V8). Read more…
Highlights
- Brightness Control
- Volume Control
- Alarm Indication
Brightness
The standby illumination of a reader is normally quite helpful, indicating the status of the doors and locating the reader in dark environments. However, this can also make the reader a target for vandalism when located in an unsupervised or vulnerable location. In these cases, it may be desirable to turn down the brightness or even turn off the standby light.
P4 controllers introduce standby brightness control functions exclusively for use with Dark Crystal Readers & Keypads . Note: the user feedback light indication for transactions still operate at full brightness.
Stand-Alone
Two new engineer’s functions give control for Reader "A" and Reader "B". Each function is adjustable in 10 steps from 0 (off) to 9 (full brightness).
- Engineers function 58 for Reader "A", default value = 5
- Engineers function 78 for Reader "B", default value = 5
Online from Doors Enterprise
From Doors Enterprise (Version 8) simply open up the “Door Settings” and click on the “Readers Tab”. Simple sliders give full range of control with separate controls provided for each reader interface.
Click "Apply" or "OK" buttons and the new setting will automatically be updated to the controller and readers in a matter of seconds.

Scope
Volume
There are occasions when the (normally useful), user feedback beep sounds from a reader can be inconvenient, distracting or just annoying. In these cases, the user feedback and Alarm sound can be separately controlled. So, for example, you can choose to turn down the user feedback but still give full volume to alarm indication.
Stand-Alone
If the P4 controller is running stand-alone, four engineer’s functions give separate "Alarm" and "Feedback" control for both Reader "A" and Reader "B". Adjustable in 16 steps from 0 (off) to 15 (full volume).
- Engineers function 31 for Reader "A" Alarm Sound, default value = 15
- Engineers function 32 for Reader "A" Feedback Sound, default value = 8
- Engineers function 33 for Reader "B" Alarm Sound, default value = 15
- Engineers function 34 for Reader "B" Feedback Sound, default value = 8
